On Friday 22 March, Appleshaw village hall hosted a joint fund raiser – an epic quiz night that challenged our grey matter.

It was co-hosted by the Appleshaw school PTA and Appleshaw church, and we raised approx. £ 1,400, which will be split between the school and the church fundraising appeal.

The evening was a resounding success. It brought together over 90 people from the school, village and area. We had 12 quiz teams with names as varied as Applebottoms and Harlocks Heroes. The wine flowed and mounds of chili con carne were consumed – much needed to activate the tired brain cells on a Friday evening…

Sally Brown wrote a brilliant quiz (90 questions) and was also an amazing professional quiz master on the night. Her questions ranged from politics to soap operas via music and sport – something for everyone. There were also some photos of famous people to name, and (my personal highlight), a paper plane competition… won by Jess Hodgkinson’s team.

At the end of the quiz, 3 teams scored  the same number of points, so there was a play-off.  The 3 teams had to guess what the population of Australia is; do you know? Answer below… The winning team was the Wooden Tops.

It was a brilliant co-production; a great team worked hard to create a flyer, organise raffle prizes, a bar selling wine and beer, the amazing quiz and delicious food. Lots of fun was had planning the evening, and everyone worked well together to create a really happy community event.

Thank you to everyone who helped organise the evening, set up and clear up!

Thank you to Randall Parker Food for generously donating the meat for the chili con carne; and thank you to our kind raffle prize donors: the Army Air Museum, the Lion Pub, Samantha’s Cleaning, Petals Boutique, Mole Valley, Andover Garden Centre, Majestic wine, Ayo Adesina (bottle of whiskey) and Mrs Tilley for her delicious chocolate cake.

* Australia has a population of 24.6m (the Wooden Tops were the closest with 25m)
