Another day, another Advent festivity…
On Sunday we had the annual Christingle service. (Sweets, oranges and lit candles: what could possibly go wrong?)
The origins of the Christingle service can be traced back to 1747 when a German minister, John de Wattville, gave the children in his congregation a lit candle with a red ribbon around it to encourage them to think about Jesus.
The Christingle service started to be adopted in the UK in the 1960s.
Since 1747 many generation of children have successfully negotiated hard so that the original ceremony has been upgraded from the slightly ascetic plain candle and red ribbon – to now involve a vat of sweets (as well as an incredibly healthy orange).
On Sunday at St. Peter-in-the-wood the Christingle service was enjoyed by a number of families. Smiles all round, as you can see from the photos below. A slightly noiser service than usual. And, happily, no mishaps linked to elevated blood sugar and lit candles.
